Marinduque is perhaps most famous for its Moriones festival, which takes place during the Lenten Season leading up to Easter Sunday. Villagers dress up in colorful costumes and masks and town centers become gigantic stages for theatrical re-enactments of the trial and crucifixion of Jesus.
Another notable local tradition is putong, a kind of ritual greeting. Honored guests are given wreaths of flowers while local people sing and throw gifts of coins and flower petals.
